Lighter (from either Old Norse há-øy meaning high island) is one of the Orkney Islands.
A spectacular coastline of Lighter is what unremarkably greets visitant to the Orkney Islands. It has extremes of several sort: a select few of the greatest drop inside Britain at St John's Head; a telling & famed sea fold, the Old Man of Hoy; some of a virtually all north natural timberland around Britain; the remote possiblity that Arctic Char survive in Heldale A water supply & a virtually all north Martello Towers, which were built to defend a locality when you took the Napoleonic War, but were never utilized within combat.

A independent naval base for Scapa Flow in both a First and Second World Wars was situated at Lyness south-east of the island. A select few like incongruous deco structures nearby date from either this time period.
An unusual rock-cut grave, A Dwarfie Stane, lies in a vale at the west of the island. These are unique within northern Europe, bearing similarity to Neolithic or Bronze Age tombs around a Mediterranean.
Around Norse mythology, Hoy is the location of the never-constant battle between Hedin and Högni.
